Tailor-Made Vocal Training: Nurturing a Growth Mindset Through Guided Self-Assessment

Self-awareness is a crucial component of performing, but it is a difficult process to introduce into the studio or rehearsal environment. This session explores how personality inventories and skill assessments can help singers identify barriers to progress and develop strategies for overcoming them.

Biography

Janene Nelson, DMA is currently on the voice faculty at Seattle Pacific University where she teaches voice and musical theatre. Dr. Nelson’s professional engagements range from opera and oratorio to early music, contemporary premieres, and musical theatre. Her operatic roles include Dorabella, Third Lady, Prince Orlofsky, Miss Todd, and Nicklaus, and her recent oratorio performances include Mozart’s Requiem, Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass, John Rutter’s Magnificat, and J.S. Bach’s Mass in B Minor. Dr. Nelson sang with the Oregon Bach Festival for seven seasons as a member of the Berwick Chorus from 2009 to 2015.

Dr. Nelson studied voice and theatre at Western Oregon University, earned a master’s degree in vocal performance and pedagogy from Central Washington University, and received her DMA in vocal performance from the University of Oregon. She also holds a Level I Certification in the Lovetri Method Somatic Voicework, a body-based approach to functional voice training.
