Musical Theatre Categories and Requirements

  • Music must be memorized
  • Accompanists must play from published, not copied music
  •  Singers must sing selections from works written for the stage 
  • Material written for movies, television, or recordings is not eligible.
  • Musicals that were composed for film or television and have been re-worked for the stage will be acceptable.   Examples:  “State Fair”, “Gigi”, “Beauty and the Beast”, “Footloose” and “Cinderella”
  • Belt and mixed belt are acceptable Musical Theatre techniques but are not required for this adjudication.  These adjudications are not meant to be preparation for a Musical Theatre audition.  Belt is not a requirement.
  • The student shall be judged based on how well they manage their chosen repertoire not in preparation for a role.

 

ALL HIGH SCHOOL CATEGORIES      (10 minutes)

Three Contrasting Music Theater Selections from scores of minutes book shows written or intended for fully realized musical productions. (a musical, revue, song cycle or operetta) Only one selection may be an operetta aria.

ALL YOUNG SINGER CATEGORIES      (10 minutes)

Grades 6th, 7th, and 8th: YS,6,7,8 (10 minutes/Competitive Category)

  1. 1 art song, classical song, or folk song
  2. 1 age appropriate musical theatre selection
  3. 1 musical selection of the singer’s choice, examples include: Disney songs, traditional children’s repertoire, orage appropriate folk song or art song. Contemporary pop selections are not allowed (including country and rock songs).

Young Singer 4th and 5th grades: (for certificate of appreciation only)

Any two songs from the YS 6,7,8 requirements

Young Singer K thru 3rd grade (for certificate of appreciation only)

Any two songs from the YS 6,7,8, requirements

ADULT  MT  1:   Post High School to age 24  (10 minutes)

ADULT  MT  2:  Age 25 to 49  (10 minutes)
